Fairy of the Spring

Series: Original
Constructed: Winter 2003
Time: 30 hours
Cons: Texas RenFest 2003

This project started as a bridesmaid gown requested by one of my friends, then serendipity turned it into a fae costume.

My friend needed a Renaissance style gown to wear to our mutual friend's D&D theme wedding and later to a local Ren Faire. She also wanted it to match a silver and amethyst heirloom necklace she had. With color and comfort a bigger concern than historical accuracy, the search for materials began.

The gown was made with McCalls # 2645 with no major alterations other than fitting. Finding the desired silver silky fabric for the sleeves and skirt was simple, but we couldn't locate any brocades in the right color that were within budget. Finally, we purchased some ivory and cream brocade and custom-dyed it. The pattern is a good one and things went together well, though we were short on time for the wedding. A final re-work after the event had everything fitting well and looking nice.

The wings were another pair that I had made previously for my senior-year art show in college. After I lent them to my friend to wear with this gown for Ren Fest, I noticed how well they went with the gown. I reworked them for added strength and customized the flowers to match, then gave them to her as a Christmas gift.
